SWEET MIST Phormium tenax “PHOS2’ PBR

Phormiums or as they are more commonly known, New Zealand Flax, come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and foliage colours. At times the choice can be overwhelming but if you are searching for a vibrant, compact dwarf Phormium I would highly recommend the following cultivar named Sweet Mist. This would have to be one of the most ultra compact dense forms to be released onto the market.

Sweet Mist has an exceptional bronze colour which provides stunning contrast to the garden especially against other green foliage plants. Sweet Mist will grow to an approximate height of 35-40cm. The smaller height of Sweet Mist makes it ideal for mass planting as a low border or fill in plant. It is well suited to smaller low maintenance modern gardens and great for use in pots and under patios.

Sweet Mist grows well in full sun to shaded areas, it will tolerate heavy frosts and moderately dry conditions. It is well suited to most soil types but prefers a well drained position.

Due to the size of Sweet Mist it is not as humidity tolerant as larger Phormiums so it is recommended that it is used in temeperate areas of Australia including VIC, SA, WA, TAS, ACT and the southern coast of NSW.

When planting Sweet Mist or any other Phormium ensure the crown or base of the plant is not planted below the soil level this will help avoid the plant from rotting at the crown and falling apart. Apply a coarse grade mulch to reduce weed growth and keep the root zone cold and moist.

Watch this video from the Garden Gurus Show where at the 151 minute mark it shows you Sweet Mist and gives some tips on how to use it.
