Post Plant Profile – BLAZE is a hardy and versatile Dianella
BLAZE Dianella tasmanica 'NPW2' PBR

Blaze is a new addition to Ozbreed’s line of strappy leaf landscape gardening plants. Blaze is a much welcomed addition because at last there is now a native ornamental flax lily that gives designers and landscapers true purpurea coloured foliage, particularly in colder areas of Australia.

Blaze is a Dianella tasmanica cultivar which was developed from the ever popular Dianella Tasred plant. Blaze is the first Dianella to have this true purpurea coloured foliage coming into effect in the cooler months of the year from mid autumn right through to the end of September or even longer depending on where you are in Australia. In summer Blaze will turn to a more green/bronzed coloured foliage to better handle the heat and then as the weather cools again it will develop its famous dark red to chocolate colour tones as it gets colder.

Blaze is a hardy and versatile plant and is perfect for mass plantings, as an accent plant, for foliage or grassy gardens, Japanese style gardens, low maintenance and low water requirement gardens. It tolerates a wide range of soil and climatic conditions and is suited to full sun and part to moderately heavy shade. Blaze responds well to a native slow release fertilizer once a year in spring or autumn. The older leaves can be removed as required and the plant can be trimmed back hard to the base of the plant if required. Blaze is best suited to Southern NSW, Sydney coastal areas, VIC, SA, WA and TAS for Western Sydney and North it is best suited as a garden plant in a shaded position.

Blaze grows to a height and width of approximately 40cm by 40cm and has good drought and frost tolerance. Blaze being a Dianella tasmanica cultivar has a broader leaf compared to other Dianella varieties, giving it a slightly more tropical look. Blaze flowers in spring with dark flower stems and buds with attractive blue and yellow coloured flowers. Blaze makes a great native alternative to Phormium with better dry and heat tolerance. Many people that see Blaze for the first time think that it is a Phormium as they have never seen a Dianella with this dark colour before. Blaze is a very unique Dianella and it is now widely available in all southern states.

BLAZE™ Dianella tasmanica NPW2 PBR is a heat tolerant Dianella that gets beautiful purple bronze foliage in Autumn, winter and early Spring. It is more heat and drought tolerant than Phormiums and for that reason is the ideal purple strappy grass like plant for California USA, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Southern NSW in Australia. In the heat of summer it turns green to survive the high temperatures.
