Design a garden for disease and pest resistance
When designing a garden that is more disease resistant, always use the more resistant cultivars of plants.
If you don't want to use them, and even if you do, don't plant just one species or type of plant! If a plant is attacked by a disease or pest then all of the plants in that area of the same type are more likely to be attacked as well, making most of your garden attacked and ugly.
If you had a variety of species in your garden then there is only a handful of plants that will have to be removed instead of a large amount.
A common disease of one plant is ink spot disease of kangaroo paws. A tougher and more resistant cultivar is the Anigozanthos flavidus 'Gold Velvet' Kangaroo Paw. This is part of the Velvet Kangaroo Paw range as well as Regal Velvet, Amber Velvet and Ruby Velvet. Because they are more resistant they can be planted in larger groups.
Another tip to prevent this disease and many like it is to not bury the plant, make sure the soil is well drained and don't plant in depressed areas. It is best to plant them in raised garden beds.
What are some other pest or disease resistant cultivars that you know of?

Re: Design a garden for disease and pest resistance
Insects and diseases are attracted to stressed, damaged or otherwise unhealthy plants, so the key to preventive control is taking good care of your plants. That means paying close attention to them and providing the conditions they need for healthy, vigorous growth.
